Do you have your monthly or weekly shopping checklist ready but you can’t decide which grocery store to shop at out of many options in Bali? ZoomBali went shopping to one grocery store on Sunset Road, Grand Lucky Bali Supermarket—and this is our pick for you! Scroll down to see why.
It’s easy to reach Grand Lucky Bali supermarket: go past several meters of Imam Bonjol Street to the one-way Sunset Road, and a white billboard with dark blue text of Grand Lucky is on the left side. The spacious parking lot is convenient for anybody going for a quick shopping. The building’s rectangle shaped space of aisles has a simple design. It’s not a large space but it offers large selections; no need to spend hours walking around everywhere to collect your checklist’s items.
Let’s see what’s available there.
Dairy Products, Juices, Vegetables, Fruits, Meat, and Frozen Food
We headed to the left side to see rows of imported and local dairy products and fruit juices. Fresh vegetables were arranged next to it. Many of these green products had organic-certified label and were grown in Indonesian farms, such as healthy snacks from hydroponics growers in Plaga, Bali. By buying local products, you help supporting go green campaign of local communities. Plus, you can stay healthy with local price!
One of the specified sections was Mushrooms, displaying many types of mushrooms including enoki mushroom, brown bunashimeji, and white grad mushroom.
Turn your back around to find great selections of mayonnaise, mustard, butter, and other food dressings, pasta, and sauces.
In the colorful fruit shelves, apple, pears, and oranges made us want to grab them all. Pineapples, bananas, watermelons, and more tropical fruits are here, too. Beside the fruit section was raw chicken, beef, salted fish, and more you usually get in meat department in supermarket.
Frozen food section gives you a rich varieties of vegetarian food, nuggets, French fries, ready to cook pastry, mantou, cakes, and ice cream.
Noodles, Rice, Cereals, Bread, and Canned Items
Indonesian instant noodles are addictive! Plenty of choices to pick from are placed in a corner of the supermarket. This corner also has various kinds of rice, some are organic.
Shelves of cereals, oat meals, bread (we spotted Sunflower seed bread and German bread), and marshmallows are around.
Do you need to restock your canned items? Canned meat (tuna, sardines, escargot, etc.) and fruits (longan fruit, lychee) are next to rice rows.
Tea and Coffee
Tea enthusiasts will enjoy this section. Numerous types of imported tea (slimming tea, chrysanthemum tea, green tea, and lemon tea, among others) from China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, are well-organized in rows.
In the lower rows, you will see packs labeled as bandrek, sekoteng, kunyit asam sirih, beras kencur, wedang, jahe asem. And no, they are not tea; these are Indonesian traditional herbal drink, generally known as jamu, which have different health benefits depending on the herbs used. Modern jamu in supermarkets come in sachets and is served by adding hot water, similar to regular instant drinks. At first, you might need to get used to its unique taste, but it works magic to energize and freshen your body. Highly recommended!
If your culinary ritual includes coffee, get your favorite brands to brew at home here.
The world’s most expensive luwak coffee is available to buy from this section. However, since it’s instant coffee, we wouldn’t say it’s “the most expensive”.
Snacks: Candies, Chips, Crackers
The sweetest part of supermarket is always candy section. Satisfy your sweet tooth with candies, chocolates, and eclairs. Alternative snacks to try other than the usual potato chips are vegan crackers and Balinese krupuk babi asli (pork crackers).
Another food supplies you can find in Grand Lucky Bali are Korean (e.g. kimchi, yopokki), Japanese (e.g. udon, wasabi, soba), and Italian (e.g. macaroni and cheese, fusilli, spaghetti) food, various types of vinegars, tofu, sausages, organic coconut sugar and organic crystal sea salt.
Kitchen Tools, Party Supplies, and Kids Section
There is a section of kitchen tools as well, so when you’ve missed some utensils to cook and prepare your dinner table (or any cases it might be, though!), just go heading to this aisle. Pans, kettles, jars, plates, ceramic cups, spatulas, any utensils you need are here.
Party supplies for your birthday bash are provided in the section across canned items. Get some balloons, plastic cutlery, plastic bowls, paper lunchbox, and paper plates.
The section offers eco-friendly supplies, such as eco chopsticks, eco skewers, and eco stirrers made of Balinese bamboo. The label says they are top rated natural products, handmade by local community, so you can support (and promote!) environmental awareness by purchasing these instead of plastic tools.
Cleaning Supplies, Toiletries, Beauty and Healthcare Products
Some aisles have cleaning supplies for home (from floor cleaner, broom, to laundry detergent) and personal hygiene (deodorant, toothpaste, soap, to hair coloring). Grand Lucky also provides sandals and underwear. For your relaxation time, Balinese natural products are great to choose. Scented candles, aromatic incenses, body scrub powder, you name it, all will leave a soothing feel to your body and mind.
When we swept through this section, a foreigner asked a store employee where aloe vera for skin burn was available at. The shop keeper spoke good English and directed him to the aisle he needed. The cashier girl was friendly, too. She greeted us, collected our goods, and calculated the price quickly. Overall, the service was satisfying.
Christmas is Coming!
Since December is here, Santa Claus figures, Christmas trees and lights, Christmas cards are on display near cashiers.
