Merayakan Murni Exhibition (Celebrating Murni)
The Merayakan Murnin Exhibition will be held between July 16th to September 18th, 2016.
Venue: Sudakara Art Space
I GAK Murniasih is a notable Balinese painters who is renowned for her controversial paintings. Her style is instantly recognizable. Lurid colors and forms, graphic symbolism with strong sexual themes; a dream-like, warped, playful surrealist quality.
During her lifetime, her art was described as ‘taboo’ and ‘dirty’. However, in the years since her death, art critics have come to see the pioneering and confrontingly honest nature of her works, both in the contexts of her artistic explorations and her own experiences of spousal violence and sexual abuse by her father. Murni, who passed away in 2006, would have turned 50 in July 4th this year. It is in this spirit that the Merayakan Murni exhibition is highlighting her life and her art.
With a comprehensive selection, many previously unseen, from the late female Balinese artist - I GAK Murniasih (Murni), this year-long project will also present the work of 15 international artists in response to her legacy.
